Flu Epidemic: Prevention and How to Spot the Symptoms

This year’s flu epidemic has been labeled as ‘one of the worst flu seasons in years’. As of last week, the flu and pneumonia are causing 1 out of 10 deaths in America. The flu is easily transmitted from one person to another, so here are some tips recommended by the Center for Disease Control in order to steer clear of it:

1. Avoid close contact with those who are sick

2. Wash your hands, when you don’t have access to soap and water, improvise with alcohol-based sanitizer

3. Avoid touching your eyes nose or mouth

4. Practice other good healthy habits, such as getting a sufficient amount of sleep, clean eating, regular exercise, and keeping your body hydrated with plenty of water

If you notice common flu-like symptoms, such as fever, headache, fatigue, coughing, and runny nose, stay home and keep away from others. If you must leave your house, follow simple precautions such as making sure you sneeze and cough into your elbows instead of your hands to avoid further spreading. These easy, yet effective actions can help you become more self-aware and help to contain further transmission.

The following groups should be specially attentive to flu symptoms:

  • Children under the age of five

  • The elderly

  • Pregnant women

  • Those with chronic health problems

However, it is recommended that anybody with flu symptoms seeks medical attention. The flu itself will not cause death but it can lead to more serious health issues that should be properly addressed by medical professionals.
