What do you need to know about fatty liver?

Although a fatty liver is often seen in overweight patients, fat can also build up in the liver of an average size person. The liver filters what we eat and drink, turning food into nutrients and breaking down substances to make them easier to digest. When a patient's diet is high in fat, the liver might not be able to get rid of all the toxins, thus gradually accumulating fat and resulting in this condition.

According to the American Liver Foundation, fatty liver is initially suspected if blood tests show high levels of liver enzymes. Once diagnosed with fatty liver a patient is at an increased risk of complications, such as cirrhosis, liver cancer or failure.

See recommendations below on how to prevent fatty liver:

  • Maintain a healthy weight

  • Eat a healthy diet

  • Exercise regularly

  • Limit alcohol intake

  • Only take medicines that you need and follow dosing recommendations.

Ask Dr. Romero for further details, discuss the supplements that can help to detoxify your liver and to decrease the chances of fat build.
